Why babies can't have honey

The surprising part is that honey is not acting like a conventional poison. It can carry dormant Clostridium botulinum spores.

In a susceptible infant intestine, a swallowed spore can germinate. The growing bacteria then make botulinum toxin inside the gut.

By 12 months, intestinal defenses are generally mature enough to resist this colonization, so swallowed spores usually remain dormant and pass through.

Why the toxin matters

Botulinum toxin attacks nerves. It can stop the chemical message that tells muscles to contract, causing weakness and, in severe cases, difficulty breathing.

Important: Not every honey sample contains spores, and honey is not the source of every infant botulism case. Avoiding honey during the first year removes one known, preventable exposure. Constipation, poor feeding, a weak cry, unusual floppiness, or breathing difficulty in an infant needs urgent medical attention.
